Hamas submits response to US envoy Steve Witkoff’s ceasefire proposal

Hamas has submitted its response to US envoy Steve Witkoff’s ceasefire proposal, seeking a permanent truce and full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Israeli officials claim the proposal lacks firm US guarantees for a lasting ceasefire. The agreement includes aid provisions and a committee to manage Gaza’s affairs.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Hamas announced on Saturday that it has submitted its response to US envoy Steve Witkoff’s latest proposal through mediators, following national consultations and a sense of responsibility toward the suffering of the Palestinian people.

The group stated that its response aims to secure a permanent ceasefire, a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and an uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to the region.

Hamas confirmed that under the agreement, ten prisoners held by the resistance would be released, along with the handover of eighteen bodies, in exchange for an agreed-upon number of Palestinian prisoners.

According to the Israeli Broadcasting Authority, an unnamed senior Israeli source stated that Tel Aviv received the US proposal on Wednesday evening.

The proposal reportedly includes the release of ten living Israeli prisoners and the handover of the bodies of ten others in two batches, in exchange for a temporary 60-day ceasefire.

Hamas had previously indicated that it was reviewing the new Witkoff proposal responsibly, ensuring that it serves the interests of the Palestinian people and leads to a permanent ceasefire.

The Israeli news website Walla quoted another senior Israeli official as saying that the new proposal is more favorable to Israel than previous ones and does not include clear US guarantees for a permanent ceasefire.

The report added that the proposal lacks firm US assurances for a lasting ceasefire beyond the initial 60-day period.

Hamas stated that it had reached an agreement on a general framework with Witkoff that would achieve a permanent ceasefire and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

The group added that the agreement includes provisions for the continuous flow of aid and the establishment of a professional committee to manage Gaza’s affairs immediately after the agreement is announced.
